History of Tully

Tully was built in 1977 and operated as a special education center for students with special needs. The school was named after Roberta B. Tully, a school board member, who volunteered many hours to working with handicapped students.

The Public Law 94-142, with the emphasis on mainstreaming, brought a decrease in the population of students attending special schools. In addition, an increase in the number of young families moving into this geographical area warranted the need for an additional elementary school. Consolidation of two special education centers allowed for Tully to be renovated as an elementary school.

The Jefferson County Board of Education approved Tully as an elementary school in the spring of 1986. Tully Elementary School opened as a regular elementary school in August of 1986 with grades K, 1, 2, and 3. Fourth grade was added in 1988 and fifth grade was added in 1989.

Tully now houses three full-day preschool programs and a before- and after-school Child Enrichment Program (CEP) sponsored by the YMCA. New housing developments coupled with a positive community image have resulted in Tully's rapid growth.

During the summer of 2017, Tully was renovated and now features a large, open library and an all-purpose area with large music and art classrooms. The electrical and data systems were all upgraded as well. Tully continues to provide a positive, safe enviroment where students can learn and grow each day.
