Pathway to Careers: Pathways to Careers is a vocational-technical education program area in which students explore a variety of career education experiences. Binet's particular program is both school and community based. Students at Binet work in the school cafeteria, clean school hallways and other school based jobs as they become available. In addition, a large number of Binet students are traveling in the community working under the supervision of both Binet and business professionals and paraprofessionals at specific work sites. Almost all students are transported by the school system's busses.
The primary goal of the work experience program at Binet is provide opportunities for our students to mature into competitive employees with desirable work habits and appropriate social skills. Student experiences are developed based on the individual needs of each student. All student work assignments are based on individual skill levels and competencies. Each student has a training plan that is signed by both the teacher and the employer, clearly defining the responsibility of each participant. Parents and students must also sign and agree with the terms of the training plan.
The program has had a business relationship with two particular businesses, Highview Baptist School and Courtyard by Marriott, for over eight years. Each of these employers has made a strong commitment to the training of Binet school students. We also have a working, signed contract between the school and the employers.
The Pathway to Careers Program is also responsible for providing the smooth transition for students from the Binet school to post secondary training or employment in some format. Each year graduating students are referred to the appropriate post secondary agencies and service providers based on that individuals particular needs.

Worklab: Worklab provides a setting for students to develop work behaviors/habits along with job skill development, all of which are necessary for successful participation in the community. Nonprofit organizations and other schools provide "real" jobs on which the Binet students work. The A-Team students attend Worklab daily for 25 minutes. The Transition and Explorer Team students attend for 50 minutes daily one semester per year.

Life Skills: Life Skills is a course that is offered to all students at Binet for one semester. The class focus is hands-on experiences allowing students to work on various daily lliving/pre-vocational skills which include food/domestic areas, personal hygiene, and cooperative interacting/learning. Each class plans, shops for, and prepares lunches and snacks throughout the semester working at their individual level of independence.

CBE: Community Based Education is an intergral part of the Binet focus of "learning for life". A curriculum is individually designed following parent survey and teacher assessment. Based on their needs, students are taken into the community emphasizing tasks such as pedestrian safety, money handling, and socially appropriate behavior.

Behavior Management: Every student at Binet has a behavior management plan that focuses on target behaviors and the procedures for dealing with them. Each classroom has a copy of these plans in order for all staff to be familiar and consistent with the students.

Crisis Intervention: The entire Binet staff has had training in Safe Physical Management Crisis Intervention (SPMCI). In the event that a student becomes a danger to himself or others and requires removal from a situation, a crisis team will respond to a tone. The student is then assisted to a time out area where de-escalation can occur. Currently, the team consists of 9 staff members certified in SPMCI. These staff members meet monthly for practices and recertify annually..

Horticulture: Binet School's horticulture program was developed as a way to introduce middle and high school students to their first hands on work experience. Through this program Binet students have learned competencies in mowing and trimming grass, landscaping, plant selection, transplanting, grounds and plant maintenance, and garden upkeep. Through many grants, the program has been able to design, build and maintain a variety of gardens, including a raised bed perennial garden, an antique rose garden, a rose arbor and an ornamental grass garden.
