Early College

JCTC logoEarly college at Western High School is an innovative program in partnership with Jefferson Community & Technical College (JCTC), JCPS, the Middle College National Consortium (MCNC), the C.E. & S. Foundation, and the James Graham Brown Foundation. It is a unique and bold step in education reform. The goal of Early College is based on the principle that increased academic rigor, combined with the opportunity to save time and money, is a powerful motivator for students to work hard and meet challenging educational goals.

The Early College at Western is the only Early College Program in Jefferson County. Our educational program aims to bridge the gap between high school and college and to target those first-generation college-goers who might otherwise not pursue a college degree.

Western students are able to earn up to 60 college credits within the Early College Program by the time they graduate high school, tuition-free! The program includes the On-Campus Experience, where students can take their junior- and senior-year courses on JCTC's campus as a full-time college student. The college credits earned throughout a student's four years apply to programs at JCTC or any Kentucky Community & Technical College System (KCTCS) college and transfer to all Kentucky public colleges and universities, giving students a head start on their college careers.

We offer collegiate-credit courses implemented through one of five teaching modes: classes taught through a co-teaching model, where a high school teacher and college professor work together; classes taught in an online setting; classes taught by college-certified high school teachers; classes where credit is awarded for successfully passing an industry/technical certification assessment; and classes taken on JCTC's campus.
