Letter From the Principal

Welcome to Knight Kingdom! We are excited that you have selected our school to educate your child. At Norton Commons Elementary School (NCES), we take great pride in ensuring that our educational program is the best in the business. As you peruse our website, please pay special attention to the clubs and extracurricular offerings, and follow us on social media. We love to have families and the community involved in our school.

I am in my nineteenth year as an educator. I am originally from Michigan, and attained my bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University before moving to Kentucky to pursue career opportunities and further postgraduate education. Within JCPS, I have served as a teacher, a teacher consultant, an assistant principal, and I am in my seventh year as a principal. I feel blessed to have been selected to open and lead NCES. I was chosen as the principal of NCES in February 2016, which allowed me to be a part of the beginning of the school. This is something I will never forget, and it definitely creates an additional sense of responsibility and passion at the school.

As principal at NCES, I believe deeply in creating an environment that is welcoming and engaging to all students. We take time out of our day to create relationships and community within the school and classrooms. Social/Emotional Learning is a distinct part of our curriculum, and it has been my experience that the feelings of safety, security, and inclusivity pay dividends in ensuring that all students are not only academically focused but also prepared to be good citizens to the larger world when they leave our doors.

We look forward to working with you and your family. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have about our school.

Letter From the Assistant Principal

Welcome, NCES Knights families. I have enjoyed 20 years of serving the Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) community as a teacher, resource teacher, and school administrator. I am passionate about child education and fully believe in the work that JCPS does to educate all students. I have two sons who attended JCPS and graduated in 2009 and 2012 from outstanding high schools. I feel that all of their needs were met, and I work to make certain that this is the same for all students who enter our doors.

I am thankful to be part of the NCES staff and serve as your assistant principal. My goal is to ensure that every child feels confident, comfortable, and cared for each day he or she enters the building. I will support their efforts and encourage them to be the best that they can be. I believe that building relationships with students and families is critical to a child’s success in school. With that in mind, I begin each day overseeing the gym with planned activities and opportunities for students to prepare for the learning that will take place in each classroom. This time of day is my favorite because I am able to see the students having fun, building friendships, and setting a positive tone for the day.

Thank you for choosing NCES. I look forward to learning more about each student and his or her family as we progress through the school year. Please feel free to reach out to me if you or your child needs any assistance.

Letter From the Counselor

Hello NCES Knights!

I am thrilled to be your school counselor at Norton Commons Elementary School (NCES). Before arriving at NCES, I had the pleasure of serving as a third-grade teacher for seven years and a behavior coach for one year. As a teacher, my greatest job satisfaction would occur when a family would tell me that their child liked school for the first time while in my classroom. That’s powerful!

At NCES, we promote our Acts of Valor (characteristics that great NCES Knights exhibit) as a guide for our schoolwide social/emotional learning. This includes monthly guidance and embedding these Acts of Valor into our daily activities. I will also conduct small groups, plan schoolwide events, and work with families to help serve the needs of our students!

We take our responsibility of promoting student growth in all areas seriously at NCES (academic, social, emotional), so If there is anything that I can do for you throughout the school year, please do not hesitate to call or email me.

Your Partner in Education,

Tim Guttmann, School Counselor
