History of FRCs

FRCs were started in Kentucky schools as a part of the KERA (Kentucky Education Reform Act) in 1990. The primary goal of these centers is to remove nonacademic barriers to learning as a means to enhance student academic success.

Mission

The Family Resource and Youth Services Center’s (FRYSC's) program mission is to enhance students’ abilities to succeed in school by developing and sustaining partnerships that promote:

  • Early learning and successful transition into school.
  • Academic achievement and well-being.
  • Graduation and transition into adult life.

What are we?

FRCs are designed to help remove barriers to student learning. Each center assists students and families through programs, through referrals to outside agencies, and by partnering with groups within and outside of the school. Programs and services are determined by the needs of the population served, available resources, location, and other local characteristics. The centers work with families to improve students' attendance, to decrease problems with behavior or suspensions, to offer academic support, to deal with mental/physical health issues, and to offer parent support and assistance. All students and families are served regardless of income.

The Greenwood FRC can offer a variety of programs and activities including:

  • After-School Activities such as Volleyball, Step Team, Basketball, Chess Club, etc.
  • Attendance Support
  • Neighborhood Place Referrals
  • Referrals for Basic Needs
  • Home Visits
  • Free and Reduced-Price Meal Assistance
  • Group Mentoring Programs
  • Every 1 Reads
  • Family Events (In collaboration with school and PTA)
  • Transition Programs (Kindergarten and Middle School)
  • Adult Education and General Educational Development (GED) Referrals
  • Information on Prenatal and Birth to 3 Years Old

Many of the programs and activities of the FRC are created by the FRC Advisory Council. This council is a group of parents, teachers/staff, and community representatives who meet bimonthly to review our budget and programs. If you would like to be a part of this group, please contact the Coordinator for more information.

We are glad your family is a part of the Greenwood family. If you have additional questions or need specific information on how the FRC can assist your family or child, please reach out at the contact information above.
