A Message From the Principal

Welcome to Valley High School and Valley Prep Academy, home of the Vikings. As you consider where you will be attending school, I am delighted that you are taking the time to find out about our historic and proud school. Since the school opened in 1936, Valley has graduated over 17,000 students, and many have gone on to attend some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country, including Harvard, United States Naval Academy, Notre Dame, University of Louisville, University of Kentucky, Western Kentucky University, and Eastern Kentucky University just to name a few.

Our graduates have gone on to be doctors, lawyers, university presidents, and teachers, and a number are internationally recognized in their profession. While this list is impressive, the majority of our graduates have gone on to lead successful and productive lives in many other rewarding careers and professions. Our educational goal at Valley is to prepare your son or daughter to enter life after high school with the knowledge, skills, attitude, and will to tackle whatever life has in store for them. We want our graduates to be productive citizens and lead happy and worthwhile lives. The school has a long-standing tradition of academic excellence, and I pledge to you that we will challenge your child to achieve beyond his or her expectations.

I understand as a parent that deciding where to send your child to school is one of the most important decisions you can make. My children are graduates of JCPS schools. Therefore, I appreciate the opportunity to share with you why it would be an excellent choice for your child to attend Valley Prep Academy in the seventh and eighth grades and Valley High School in grades nine through twelve.

Valley is a 5-Star Elite School and a Ford Next Generation Learning (NGL) center within the Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) District. Our teachers and staff are committed to the same educational goals and objectives as all JCPS schools.

Valley offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses in numerous fields of study, and courses completed earn college credits. Valley has been given the distinction of being named a Medical Magnet School offering Professional Career Theme Programs in Medicine, Health, and the Environment. For students considering a medical degree in college, Biomedical courses are available to help them prepare for the rigorous training they will experience in medical school.

Valley is unique in that our seniors who graduate with an industry certification as a medical nursing assistant have worked in a medical facility with patients. In addition, the certification means they are employable immediately upon graduating. Because Valley is a Medical Magnet, our students can also study sports medicine with an emphasis on athletic training and veterinary medicine with an industry certification available as a veterinary assistant.

Other courses of study include Liberal Arts, Band, Orchestra, Chorus, and Drama. For students interested in the military, Valley has the first in Kentucky Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) Program, which has won numerous awards locally and state-wide.

Valley students, including the seventh and eighth graders, have the opportunity to participate in numerous team and individual sports and after-school clubs and programs. These experiences help them learn to work with other students while pursuing a common goal in a competitive environment. Over the years, our athletic teams have achieved success at every level. Our coaches and sponsors take pride in teaching players and club members how to win with humility, lose with grace, and enjoy the experience of playing the game.

The Valley High School campus is second to none in JCPS. Students have available to them state-of-the-art computers and other technology that will help them in their classes as well as challenge them in their studies. In 2012, JCPS invested more than $26 million in building a state-of-the-art auditorium and the largest high school gymnasium/arena in Louisville with a first-class weight room. Numerous musical performances, plays, talent shows, and other community events are held in the Conrad Bachmann Auditorium. In addition to home basketball, volleyball, and cheerleading competitions being held in the J.C. Cantrell Arena, statewide volleyball and cheerleading competitions and the Louisville Invitational Basketball Tournament (LIT) are held in the arena as well.

Finally, I want you to know that my staff and I are working hard and smart every day to provide a safe and academically challenging learning environment for our students. Plus, our Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) and Alumni Association are active and support the school 100 percent.

I have an open door policy and invite you to meet with me any time you feel the need. My phone number is 485-8339, and my assistant, Jackie, will be glad to set up an appointment. If you prefer to contact me by email, my address is

Thank you again for your interest in Valley. I sincerely hope you join us and become a part of the Viking Nation!
