Dress Code

We all value the diversity of the students who have been attracted to Brandeis, and we believe that these guidelines will not impede that diversity. In order to create a serious climate conducive for learning and to prepare students for a successful year, certain dress expectations are necessary. The following attire is deemed inappropriate and unacceptable in the school building during regular school hours and after-school instructional activities.

• Head attire, including hats, caps, bandannas, scarves, hoods, sweatbands, etc., is not allowed except during special school events as stated by the staff. Appropriate head attire is accepted for religious/cultural reasons.
• Clothing that is revealing in nature is not permitted. (Inappropriate clothing includes spaghetti straps, showing undergarments, bare backs and midriffs, plunging necklines, sheer material, form-fitting clothing, etc.)
• Sleeveless tank top T-shirts are not permitted (called “A-shirts”).
• Skirts and shorts must be no shorter than the fingertips with arms extended at the sides.
• Pants/shorts must be worn at waist-level.
• The best shoes are tennis shoes. However, shoes must have straps around the ankle. Thick-soled/high-heeled shoes and flip-flops are not allowed. Shoes with wheels are not permitted in school.
• Clothing or accessories displaying vulgar/offensive messages or endorsing the use of tobacco, alcohol, or drugs are not permitted.
• Any attire that may cause a disruption in the educational process or jeopardize the safety of students or teachers or interfere with the learning environment is not permitted. This includes colored hair.

The administration reserves the right to determine if student attire is inappropriate for school. Students will be sent to the office if clothing is not appropriate. Parents may be called to bring appropriate clothing/shoes to school. Students should dress appropriately for daily physical education (PE).
